Designed by The Architects Collaborative following their winning 1973 competition proposal,
the National Library and Cultural Center formed one of Abu Dhabi’s earliest major civic-cultural institutions. Positioned adjacent to Qasr Al Hosn within the historic urban center, the project played a significant role in shaping the cultural identity of the emerging capital.
The building combines a national library, exhibition spaces, conference halls, and an auditorium within a composition organized around landscaped courtyards and shaded circulation zones. To
the southeast, open courtyards framed by arcades extend the institution into the public realm, each supporting distinct programmatic functions.
Architecturally, the project demonstrates a localized response to Abu Dhabi’s climatic conditions. Deep arcades provide shaded movement and transitional thresholds, while carefully controlled openings reduce solar exposure. Where larger glazed surfaces are introduced, protective architectural depth mitigates heat gain while preserving openness. The result is a civic institution that negotiates imported modernist formal language through environmental adaptation and regional spatial sensibilities.
