Kalba Prototypes:
Klaba Kindergarten
Designed by Rais and Tukan in 1973 and constructed in Kalba in 1979, the Kalba Kindergarten formed part of a nationwide kindergarten prototype developed to support the rapid expansion of public education following the formation of the UAE. The design was replicated across several emirates for more than a decade, establishing a recognizable architectural model that responded to the educational and climatic needs of the emerging nation. In many cases, these kindergartens were situated adjacent to standardized school complexes designed by Khatib & Alami in 1981, creating integrated educational campuses that could be deployed across the Northern Emirates.
The building is organized around a modular cluster system in which a single educational unit becomes the primary building block of the project. Each cluster consists of three classrooms arranged around a shared indoor and outdoor multipurpose space and is identified externally by a group of four pyramidal roofs incorporating wind towers. These clusters are repeated and aggregated across the plan, generating a composition that recalls the logic of a mat building, where growth occurs through the multiplication of interconnected units rather than through a centralized form.
Architecturally, the project combines environmental responsiveness with a human-scaled approach to education. The classrooms, common spaces, patios, galleries, and courtyards form a continuous sequence of indoor and outdoor environments that blur the boundaries between learning and play. The pyramidal roofscape and integrated wind towers provide natural ventilation while establishing a distinct architectural identity, demonstrating how a standardized prototype could maintain both environmental performance and spatial richness across multiple sites.
